Spring into April Skiing

On an average season the conditions in April are fantastic. The consistent factor is that even on a below average season the snow will always come. If resorts do not enjoy good conditions until after Christmas, seasons will inevitably end well, such as with the winter of 06/07. For this reason April should be considered for corporate trips, as much as January, February and March. April actually has some of the year’s best skiing. Long days and more sunshine add to a beautiful climate for any event. The Alps have had some of the best skiing of the season for the past five years in April, so it’s a shame people shy away from it. It is true that snow can be softer in April, but there’s plenty of it and with a skilled guide you can find north facing pistes, and the best snow available. “Plus, the kids are all in school, so the pistes are empty!” says Adam Honey, MD of Mountain Leap, a bespoke Alpine corporate events company. The statistics back this up. This chart of average snowfall for Chamonix for the past eight years shows that pistes have had a healthy covering throughout April. The same is true for all other mid to high altitude resorts. Chamonix Average Snow LevelsChamonix Average Snow Levels So, there’s definitely lots of snow, longer days, and sunny terraces. Another bonus is the cheaper accommodation due to better availability, and better access to guides and restaurants. With clearer pistes, April should be looking very appealing. Seasons will vary. Some Aprils will be warmer, others colder, but it is still very much part of the ski season. Says Adam Honey, “It’s a PR battle, but we’re winning it. The Alps are doing fine at the end of the season, and the winter of 07/08 was one of the best ever, so we’re building on that success.” Once businesses choose April skiing they will enjoy long, spring days on the piste, lovely lunches on sunny terraces and temperatures that all can enjoy. The important thing to remember now is to book early, to secure the accommodation of choice in the resort that best suits.
